Life beyond Aila : an everyday doom…
Severe cyclonic storm “Aila” hit West Bengal on May 25, 2009 at 125 km/hr. The well known Sunderban delta region was badly damaged due to severe rain, cyclonic storm and waves. The cyclone flooded 55 major islands, destroyed 400 kilometers of embankments and leaving 55 lakhs people homeless.
Still now, even after 6 months since this massive devastation, life could not return to its normal state. People have nothing to survive on their own, as farming is suspended for soil salinity for the next couple of years. Relief was sent at the time of emergency. But is that all ??

Two of our photographers, Arup Bhattacharya & Prabal Banerjee are working on a small village Hatgacha, Sandeshkhali (Block II) is one of the flooded island. They are primarily focused to portray their present daily life that is full with grief, despair and frustration.
We will shortly release the photo-essay based on their findings.
