Photographer: Nilayan Dutta
Biography: I am a self-taught photojournalist, born in 1973 in Calcutta, India. I discovered my interest in photography at the age of 19 during my frequent visit to a library named Chitrabani in my home city and since then I have started studying photography by myself with the enormous collection of books on photography that the library possessed. I have been highly influenced by the works of European and American photographers like Robert Capa, Cartier Bresson, Joseph Kaudelka, Eugene Richards and Sebastiao Salgada as well as by Indian photographers such as Kishor Parekh and Raghubir Singh. Nearly after two years of studying photography through books, I began to take photographs. In 1996 joined The Telegraph, a leading English daily newspaper in Calcutta as a stringer photographer. Regular photojournalistic contributions to British news agency Reuters and the American news agency Associated Press from 1998-2002. Was nominated by World Press Photo in 2000 to take part in a three years long training course on photojournalism along with a handful of top young photojournalists selected from across the country. The course was focused to expose the global arena of photojournalism to Indian photographers. Was nominated and sent to Germany in 2004 for the completion of internship with the GEO magazine and Agency FOCUS. Have been freelancing for National and International media, agencies and also for NGOs and INGOs. Have been awarded with the Media Fellowship by PANOS South Asia to complete a documentary photography project, titled “An Endeavour Against Tuberculosis Through the Rough Terrain of Sunderban” in 2005 With a voluntary effort went to Nepal to teach photojournalism at the College of Journalism and Mass Communication in Kathmandu in 2006 Presently working on self funded documentary projects besides freelance assignments. Workshops Conducted: Conducted a workshop titled Eye to Eye dealing with teaching photography to the underprivileged children in West Bengal with the support of Save the Children. Conducted a workshop titled Photojournalism in Digital Age to the professional photojournalists in Nepal with the cooperation of Photo Circle, Kathmandu. Taught photojournalism to the Bhutanese refugee journalists exiled in Nepal with the help of Fredskorpset, Norway. Taught video documentation to the disabled women in Kolkata with the support of Association for Women with Disability (AWWD) Kolkata Professional Credits: My works have featured on some National and International magazines, newspapers and webzines including of New York Magazine, ENTER (World Press Photo), Corriere Della Serra, Private, Far Eastern Economic Review, El Mondo, Chronicle of Philanthropy, Tehelka, Rediff News Outlook group, Mint and Open magazine. Having been exhibited many of the countries in the world my photographs have also been collected at the National Gallery of Modern Arts in India for a permanent exhibition and also by many individual collectors in Europe.
